Chaya — The Maya Superfood Tree
The ancient Maya miracle plant — packed with iron, calcium, and protein. A living legacy from the Yucatán.
About This Plant
Chaya, known as the 'Tree Spinach' or 'Maya Miracle Plant', is one of the most nutritious plants in the world. Cultivated by the ancient Maya civilization for thousands of years in the Yucatán Peninsula, Chaya leaves contain up to 3x more iron than spinach, are rich in calcium, protein, and antioxidants. This fast-growing, drought-tolerant perennial thrives in tropical climates and can produce edible leaves year-round. A single mature plant can feed a family.
Care Instructions
Plant in well-draining soil with full to partial sun. Water regularly during establishment, then drought-tolerant once mature. Always cook leaves before eating — boil for 5 minutes to neutralize hydrocyanic glycosides.
Soil Requirements
Well-draining, loamy or sandy soil
